The Story of Mencius’ Mother Cutting the Cloth

Mencius (372–289 BCE) was a renowned Chinese philosopher during the Warring States period. His mother, Lady Zhang, is often celebrated as a model of wisdom and dedication in parenting.

As a child, Mencius was playful and often neglected his studies. One day, he skipped school and returned home to play. His mother, who was weaving cloth at the time, noticed his absence from school. Without hesitation, she took a pair of scissors and cut the fabric in half.

Startled, Mencius asked, “Mother, why did you ruin such a beautiful piece of cloth?”

Looking at her son sternly, she replied, “If you abandon your studies midway, your life will be as useless as this ruined fabric. Without knowledge, you will struggle in society and be forced into difficult labor. However, if you study diligently and expand your understanding, you will secure a stable future and avoid unnecessary hardships.”

She explained that learning is like weaving cloth, requiring patience and continuity that requires patience and consistency. If interrupted, all previous efforts would be wasted.

Her words deeply resonated with Mencius. From that moment on, he committed himself to his studies, eventually becoming one of China’s greatest thinkers.
