Genre: Court Music
Nhã nhạc cung đình Huế is a unique form of traditional music in Vietnam, once performed during the feudal dynasties, particularly under the Nguyễn Dynasty. This genre is regarded as solemn and ceremonial, typically featured in royal rituals, national festivals, and significant events such as coronations, ceremonies honoring heaven and earth, or receptions for foreign envoys.
This art form harmoniously combines music, dance, and performance, utilizing a variety of traditional instruments such as the đàn tỳ bà (pear-shaped lute), đàn tranh (zither), đàn nguyệt (moon lute), drums, flutes, and a range of percussion instruments. Its melodies are dignified and profound, reflecting the grandeur and noble elegance of the royal court.
In 2003, Nhã nhạc cung đình Huế was recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, affirming its exceptional cultural value in preserving and promoting the nation’s cultural identity.
